Covington was named winner of the Red Gold IHSAA Sportsmanship Award for the 2009 fall sports season, the IHSAA announced. Red Gold presented a $2,000 cash award to the school because the Trojans best exemplified good sportsmanship in all areas of their athletic programs, both on and off the field.
Red Gold honored Covington during halftime of the Class 4A football state championship Nov. 28 at Lucas Oil Stadium.
The award recognizes the outstanding efforts of an individual school that promotes sportsmanship in their high school athletics program. Red Gold, IHSAA, and the IHSAA Student Advisory Committee participated in the award selection process.
“Receiving recognition for our efforts in promoting sportsmanship and student leadership is an honor,” said T. Kirk Booe, the Fountain County school’s principal. “Awards of this nature shine a spotlight on our students, school and community.”
Red Gold, headquartered in Orestes, is one of the largest privately owned tomato processors in the nation. The company produces canned tomatoes and tomato-based products.
